I remember those, but some of them were a pain to open.

You're going to hate me, but we don't have chiggers, mosquitoes, or biting flies here. We have harmless gnats, hover flies and regular flies, but they're so rare, you can sit outside all day and may never see one. It's too dry for them. We can get mosquitoes near bodies of water, but that's rare too. The last time I saw a mosquito was about 6 years ago.

I know what it's like to have mosquitoes, I've been to Canada in summer.

Illinois isn't too bad, mosquito-wise, unless you're in the woods/prairie. It's really just chiggers you have to worry about- sit down on the grass in shorts, and expect to have a dozen itchy, red lumps on the insides of your knees and the backs of your thighs.

Do you have ants?

Our Thread

Our ants are tiny little black Argentine ants and even smaller Pharoah ants. Neither of them can bite. They're everywhere and you can't get rid of them, but you could lay down on a colony, get covered in them and not get bitten.

Every few years, in drought, they try to come in doors for water, but they can't chew through wood or calking, so you just get good at sealing the place up and they'll never find your pantry. Of course since they're so small, this can take a few seasons to plug every hole. If they're in the house, they don't leave a mess, they pick up their dead and refuse.

We also have vaious fire ants, but the Argentine and Pharoah ants pretty much drown them out of every niche and aggressively defend their territory. They form supercolonies that can have dozens of queens and spread over miles.

They even compete with ground termites in most soils.

The ants have just started coming out here. I keep finding one or two inside at a time. Every year, Jamie takes a can of Raid and sprays the skirt of the house and the bottoms of the windows, and that's good enough to keep them from running lines into the house and out again. If they start coming in, he does it again, and that stops it. There's no way to plug up a modular home.

Last fall on a walk during the school day, we found what looked like an ant colony that was migrating or something. There were thousands of black ants and they were carrying brood and spawn along the street gutter. It had stormed the night before so we guessed that their hill got flooded or something. I think ant colonies are cool. They really show how emergence happens in nature.

Have you ever had dogs? What size of dog do you think is best? If my dog was any bigger I wouldn't be able to pick him up easy, so I say twenty pounds and short and boxy is a good size dog. - C

Our Thread

If this isn’t a question directed at anyone in particular, over the course of my/our life we’ve had eight dogs, three of which we still have. They’re papillons that weigh about 3 kilograms each.

It was 2016 and we kept getting these tiny little ants in the house, and because our mother and I had two ends of one long desk, the ants invaded both of our laptops. Mine ended up being fine but the ants in our mother’s laptop messed up the hard drive or something and a lot of stuff disappeared. Ants are evil. Especially if they bite.

What happened, I was out, sorry.

I totally let this thread fly under the radar, what a mistake!
