HorizonRunner September 3, 2013 September 3, 2013 I'm an amateur writer, and I've been stuck with writer's block for a long time now. Last night, I was commiserating with Comet, my surprisingly (read: delightfully) vocal tulpa of two weeks, and we happened to get on the topic of some of the things Amadeus talked about in his "Exodus" article. I'd love to believe that some day we'll be capable of that kind of imposition, though obviously it's a bit too soon for that. At the same time, I had a brief flash of inspiration, thinking back to having watched "My Dinner With Andre" recently. I hit upon the idea of writing a story. The basic concept is simple, and perhaps even a bit too close to that of the aforementioned movie. A novelist suffering from writer's block (write what you know) learns from an internet friend that an "incredible man" lives near him, and arranges a meeting in the vain hope of finding something to write about. The man, who really needs a good name (accepting suggestions!), meets him at a local restaurant, and the two get to talking about things. The "incredible man" acts strangely, seeming to focus on things that aren't there and laughing seemingly at nothing. He eventually explains that he is a practitioner of a (familiar to us) form of Tibetan "mysticism" (though perhaps not so mystical after all), and goes on to elaborate on his experiences with a community of other like-minded people over the internet (again, sound familiar?). If I went about this, it would be fiction (though as well-researched as I could manage). The characters would not be named after anyone on the site (not even myself), though I would probably end up drawing inspiration heavily from users and the site itself. In all likelihood, even the site name would be different. That said, I felt it was necessary to... well, to ask for permission, I guess. I'm fairly new here, and I most certainly can't promise I'll turn out a good book from all this, or even that I'll end up finishing it. But if you're willing to allow me to use you and this site for inspiration, I'd love to try. There are some great stories here, and a great deal of potential for more to be told, even in my incompetent hands. I'm willing to post a link to the in-progress Google document and/or give commenting privileges as asked. If you'd like me to specifically refrain from using you or your tulpa as inspiration in any form, please let me know. If you think this is a good idea, or an AWFUL idea, please let me know. Constructive criticism is a good thing, after all. Edit: The first draft of Chapter 1 is finished. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fa2Rp-WixUyhFr5xiH5g8_btBbfYFVNidQbym02bEA0/edit?usp=sharing [align=center]We've hit the edge of understanding, and we're stepping off with nothing but a pen and paper. Shui September 3, 2013 September 3, 2013 Well, you're welcome to use me. Just a thought: when I write a story, I like to review similar stories. So you might be interested in An Unlikely Prophet and Harvey, if you're not already familiar with them. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you.'"
Zer0.iNSaNiTY September 3, 2013 September 3, 2013 Y u ask permission. Tulpa has no copyright. Just write. Honestly, the only thing you may need permission about would be basing characters off people. Either way, that sounds really cool ^^ [Forseen] {Muse} |Alix|

So you might be interested in An Unlikely Prophet and Harvey, if you're not already familiar with them. Fascinating... I was unaware that there were stories involving tulpas, though in retrospect it seems obvious that SOME would exist. The forum link in particular is interesting. I always suspected something was off about Alexander Hamilton. xD I'll have to look and see if the book is in any libraries around here. Y u ask permission. Tulpa has no copyright. Just write. Honestly, the only thing you may need permission about would be basing characters off people. Either way, that sounds really cool ^^ That's basically what I wanted permission for. Intentionally or otherwise, I fear I'll end up accidentally using scenarios and stories I've read on the site. I'm going to try to mitigate it, but I've no illusions that it won't happen at some point. Oh, I'm also accepting suggestions for a title, as well as names for the "interesting man" (Gabriel Sterne, but that's just a placeholder) and his tulpas. Joshua+1 September 3, 2013 September 3, 2013 I suppose it really wouldn't be a problem if no one/no tulpa is mentioned by his/her/shkler name. Hell, someone might even go like "Hey, that happened to me! 2spooky!" but I see that as the only drama arising. As for titles..."The Upaya Quality", "Mind Forge", "Mental Eden", and "Ex Nihilo" all could be attractive, both for relation to the topic and for just sounding plain cool. Names for the "interesting man" (who I assume is the tupper?): Kasper Hosser, Tormod Mielikki, Hew Bahman, Jeriel Manaj, Rede Manesh, all of which have relevance to either a "man of mysterious circumstances" (Kasper Hosser (Casper Hauser)) or pertaining to the mind (...everything else). Good luck. Name: Ruusaan Form: Human Working on: Imposition Age: 20 (13/10/2012) Name: Lyra Form: Satyr Working on: Age: 8 Name: Lily Form: Human Working on: Age: 19 (12/12/2012)

I think the only problem would be if someone said "You should do this in your story" and you did it, they might be able to claim to be a cowriter and sue you, unless they relinquish rights to the idea beforehand. But yeah, I think anything on this site that's presented as a true account of something that happened to the poster should be fair game. Of course this might vary by country, and I could be completely wrong. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you.'"
Zer0.iNSaNiTY September 3, 2013 September 3, 2013 Oh, oki. Names? Um... I'mma ask Forseen :3 [Hm... Shepard Bohodziak.] Uhh... anything else? [... lemme think... Shaman. Shaman um.... Regal. Shaman Regal.] And again, I introduce you to the master of weird names. {... I like Alfred.} And then we have Muse XD [Forseen] {Muse} |Alix|

Good luck. Thanks! I like those titles, especially. The "interesting man" is actually a highly experienced tulpamancer with multiple tulpas, not a tupper himself. The narrator will be going into the conversation completely blind, and will be learning about the phenomenon from him, giving readers without experience a character to identify with. On the other hand, I can definitely use the names for the man's many tulpas (probably around seven, all told). Oh, oki. Names? Um... I'mma ask Forseen :3 [Hm... Shepard Bohodziak.] Uhh... anything else? [... lemme think... Shaman. Shaman um.... Regal. Shaman Regal.] And again, I introduce you to the master of weird names. {... I like Alfred.} And then we have Muse XD It's okay, I like Shepard Bohodziak. XD And in fact, if you're all right with it, I'd love to use "Alfred Regal", if not as the man's name, then as the name of someone he knows... Legally, I think this is right. I think the only problem would be if someone said "You should do this in your story" and you did it, they might be able to claim to be a cowriter and sue you, unless they relinquish rights to the idea beforehand. Of course this might vary by country, and I could be completely wrong. I think that's how it works, though if that hypothetical scenario happened I think I would be forced to question the value of humanity. -__- [align=center]We've hit the edge of understanding, and we're stepping off with nothing but a pen and paper. Zer0.iNSaNiTY September 4, 2013 September 4, 2013 {YAY I WIN.} XD Go ahead and use whatever. We couldn't care less. [Forseen] {Muse} |Alix|
Nobillis September 5, 2013 September 5, 2013 'Ira Le Jon' for the interesting man? How long has he had tulpas for? When did he start? (in the story I mean, it would affect how he came to know of tulpas) Please consider supporting Tulpa.info.
