TB March 9, 2024 March 9, 2024 I'll share some music for Akira Toriyama These are some of my favorite songs and I sing them all the time while going about my day. Here's Chala Head Chala. This is the opening to Dragonball Z from Raditz until the end of Cell. Nani ga okitemo kibun wa henohenokappa! (No matter what happens, feel like it's no big deal!) Atama karappo no hou ga, yume tsumekomeru! (Keep your head empty so you can stuff it with dreams!) Here is another dear song, "We We're Angels", it is the opening of the Buu saga. To My Friends, senaka no hane wa nakushitakeredo, mada, fushigina chikara nokotteru (To my friends, we may have lost the wings on our back, but there still is a mystical power that lingers on) Sou, egaku bijyon genjitsu ni suru mahou ga attanada... Hontou sa! (Yes, there is magic to make our visions become reality... It's true!) To My Friends, kizutsuki, soshite mandeyukou (To my friends, we're hurt, so let's learn from it and go on!) Those are some of the lyrics that stand out to me. They are mostly my translations so if they're wrong I don't care lol, that's how I understood them, except the second song because the lyrics I found of it just happened to have translations next to them, but it is about what I thought, except in japanese it is extremely unclear who he is talking about. The translation I found says "we" when I would have thought it would be "you", since the subject seems to be your friends and idk where it implies they are also talking about themself, so I'm not sure the reason for that, but I trust the person who translated it is better at Japanese than me as it seems on linkedin they are a professional translator. I personally think it can be seen as either, I don't know how a Japanese person understands it, would be interesting to ask. Anyhow, a lot of dragonball song lyrics sound like a letter to cheer someone up or life advice or something, and they always put me in a good mood seemingly no matter how I feel. There are hundreds of songs associated with dragonball from many openings and endings (much less than modern anime, except super, because OG has 1 opening and Z has 2 openings, GT has 1 opening, but Super being a modern anime has like 10 like other animes), insert songs (maybe I'll post some tomorrow, for example Unmei no Hi, which is a song that plays at a key moment in Z in the Japanese version, the English versions remove the insert songs for some reason...), image songs, which image songs are things such as the DBZ Music Hits Collection, which are a mixture of songs sung by various characters in the show and are often funny, or sung by other singers but the song just has dragonball vibes, which are highly positive, and of course just the OST, which is the background music to go along with the show, and there are MANY different versions, like the original Japanese Shunsuke Kikuchi score (also a man who has recently died, so many people who worked on dragonball have died, it almost seems cursed), then in the original Ocean Dub they changed the music to their own, then in the Funimation dub that continued where Ocean Dub left off changed the score again by Bruce Falconer, then there is also the Johnson score, and DBZ Kai from Raditz to the end of Cell was composed by Kenji Yamamoto, then the Buu arc and Super was composed by Norihito Sumitomo. GT has its Japanese OST and silly but still enjoyable English OST. Every different score creates a whole new mood for the show and radically changes how you interpret scenes. The Japanese score utilizes total silence in some scenes, which makes them feel disturbingly real and consequential, and when it does have music it can give a sense of a grand adventure or something exciting happening, or also get very dire and tragic sounding. With Bruce Falconer, I'm not sure there is a single moment of silence, if there is it is much rarer. There is always something musical going on. He also splices certain parts of different themes together, rapidly changing the mood of his music as a fight goes back and forth. Each sound of his music sounds like it is intentionally tied to exactly what you are seeing in that very moment, while the Japanese is more broad and is the sound for it overall. Bruce Falconer gives me the feel of supernatural space aliens having world shattering and heaven shaking fights. It's a lot more mysterious and wooey, but then there will be a metal guitar. The Japanese uses orchestral music a lot, like violins and cellos and various horns and heavy bells. Many highly popular bands have just made music for the show as well. How could I forget?! Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku, which is a song by Field of View and is used as GTs opening. That should be in another post though. It's maybe my favorite. I hope this is interesting for you all and that you like the lyrics. It's quite a different vibe than the suicidal satanic death rap (I made this name up but you can see why if you listen to it, lol). I like a wide variety of things, but Dragonball related music is very much my favorite, and it has a wide variety of moods and types, so maybe there is something for everyone. I hope so. Thanks, I hope a text wall talking about Dragonball music is legal in this thread. I just felt like making a big post after recent events, and sharing my love for the show.
