I want to hear your opinions. Some say that since they fade back into your mind, as long as you remember them, it's possible for them to be brought back. Others would say there is a set amount of time before the person under that memory fades away for good. Still others have different views.

What do you think? What do your tulpas think?

(I'm not asking for myself, by the way.)

nah

It's up to the person's ability to recall things, differs for everyone. Tulpas don't "die", ever. But if your tulpa was never really that well developed and then you didn't think of them for a year, there may not be that much to recall in the first place. Or that is, the effort required to bring them back is equivalent to making a tulpa in the first place, so some people don't bother.

Do whatever you want with your imaginary friends, forget old ones and make new ones if you so desire. But at no point should your belief that tulpas can "die" or "spontaneously leave" influence your decision. That's not a thing. It's just your choice and belief.

Everyone deserves to love and be loved. It's human nature.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us about tulpamancy stuff there.

I mostly agree with Luminesce, but i think when you reach a certain point and there isn't much left of your tulpa, you're basically creating a new one, a clone based on the original with the lack of its memories etc. Not that would be bad, but let's say when you kept a tulpa around for like 10 years and spend the next 30 years without it, it probably wouldn't have memories about the first 10 years after getting it back, beside that what you could recall yourself. Unspoken opinions etc. would be lost.

I agree! If you've left it alone that long and don't really remember much about it, it's probably going to be deteriorated or actually a new one.

Or you know, if you believed that they were the same tulpa, they would have their old memories and be similar to how they were. But to be fair, a lot of time when people bring back very old tulpas, they change in some small ways. That's usually attributed to the host themself changing over that time, though some people believe the tulpa is responsible. IMO, it's the tulpa plus your changed mind, as they don't live in your past brain anymore but your new one, so they may think of themselves differently.

Based on my experience with a tulpa who has been around off and on for seventeen years, I agree with this. That last part bolded for emphasis.

Yeah that refers to a point I was wondering about: How sensitive is the integrity of the tulpa mind really? If its "brain" keeps intact even when you don't pay attention for a long time, there is no real reason for it to forget anything, even when the tulpa doesn't think about it for long time, just like a regular human being.

However if the tulpa really merges back into the host, there wouldn't be a reason for the tulpa to be protected, and therefore no warranty that its memories would return after calling it back. It would mainly depend on your brain to get the right parts back together. The more complex the tulpa was, the more improbable it would turn out the same.

I've been putting some research into this recently. So, the brain's "Imagination", or mental work space, is scattered all throughout the brain. It's an extensive network of different parts all interacting with each other. So these different parts of your brain interact to do pretty much anything that requires thinking. So if a tulpa really does occupy a sectioned part of the brain, if you will, then it's just a susceptible as the human mind. It could very well be that if a tulpa is forgotten or left behind, then it could "dissipate" back into the brain. But you'd also have to consider those who have DID. Just because they don't think about their alters, doesn't mean they stop existing. No conscious effort is used to maintain their existence and their ability to take over the body, and there seem to be very few cases of the personalities merging together as one. So by that logic, maybe tulpas AREN'T very susceptible to simply "fading away". Maybe there's a whole lot more to it.

We gave up on using different colors for each of us, so there's Al, Ollie, and Eva. We're all rabbits, get over it.

There are a lot of 'what ifs' in that paragraph. I don't think you could call it research. Maybe investigation?

DID is different from tulpamancy in a lot of ways. For one, it's a mental illness, and besides the multiplicity, it can't really be compared. Also, the host does not create the alters consciously- they develop on their own as a result of trauma, therefore they are not reliant on the host for attention. Alters are not the same things as tulpas; the only similarities are their shared status as people and as headmates/system members.

Bad comparison, but I see your point. There are first-hand accounts from tulpas about what it felt like to be forgotten about or dissipated, though, and I think those are a great primary source of information. I believe there's a thread about it in the research forum?
