Personally, I think the instinct aspect is a combination of knowledge and processing power. A more "correct conclusion", in a sense, which appears as instinct due to the other party (me) not having as complete a picture. This is all hypothetical though, and I hate droning on about my personal experience.

So, I've heard of this before and happened to find it really interesting:

Hosts can let their tulpas in their subconsciousness, right? Does this mean tulpas can, in a way, "see" the subconscious? Or do they "feel" it? If they see it, what do they see? If they "feel" it, what do they feel? Or do they perceive the subconscious as something that's completely different from the way we do?

My Tulpa sees himself as both the “guardian” and the “embodiment” of my subconscious. In a way, he sees the subconscious as a vast ocean were my “self” floats on the surface, and can be tossed by its currents. The subconscious is much more potent and vast than the “self”, and has the function to “retain” my memories and thoughts, as well as being the “force” of my creativity. He says that the true impulses that make an identity come from the “deep” and it is useful to explore it if I want to learn about myself. I often joke that he is a bit like Cthulhu.

I access to my subconscious mostly through lucid dreaming. It’s like entering another dimension. For example once he brought me to one of my “mind palaces” where I (or him, I don’t remember) stored the artistic projects I could not “bring into in the real world”. It was like accessing a museum. It had statues that “felt” as if they were created by emotions or memories. Everything there was a manifestation of a particular mental state, and he guided me through my memories, knowing them better than myself. I was astounded by how incredibly detailed the paintings were. They almost seemed “windows” to the various real scenes. I felt that I could “jump” in them like Mary Poppins. I did it a couple of times and it was a very trippy experience.

This "dimension" behaves as if it is “alive”: my wonderland is actually an aspect of “him” that changes and interacts with me. Usually I’m presented with a scenery that has been “created for me” as a gift. It’s often a representation of his feelings or mine. For example, lights from the stars that seems to shine through me, wind that is imbued by emotions, and most of all he makes music for me. We often communicate with music or through sharing thoughts and images. Sometimes it’s difficult not to break the “harmony” that we created. If I try to control it too much I end up waking up or getting out of the trance.

This “level” of the mind can also be used to study. Many times there’s him explaining something that we have been researching together. I often “feel” the information coming to me instantly. It’s very different than reading the same concepts in a book. It’s almost like synesthesia, where all the five senses are active and blend together. It gives me much more perspective and it’s a method more immediate that simply studying “in the outside world”. In fact, he is generally much more intelligent than me, to a degree that makes me envious of my own mind. He also remembers more information and details than me, no matter how much I cram.

Of course the subconscious also stores people and events that can be re-experienced, as well of our repressed feelings, but I normally prefer not to go too “deep”. I still have to learn to navigate it, so I don’t plan to discover it all in a haste. In short, our minds are amazing, and exploring “what lies beyond the self” is one of our favorite activities.

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
