Allison the Tulpa March 29, 2013 Author March 29, 2013 Aaaaaaand I'm not getting a tablet, according to my parents just now. My mom: you could pay for 40 dollars of it... My dad: you have apps on your kindle, you don't need it. The life of a young draw-er is tough. My parents have no idea, do they? And the apps on my kindle suck. So I'm stuck with paint.net for now, thanks for the suggestions, but I probably won't be getting anything anytime soon... And that's how I ended up in this padded cell PR
Avalanche March 29, 2013 March 29, 2013 $40 isn't that much? How tight are your parents and how poor are you? frt
Allison the Tulpa March 29, 2013 Author March 29, 2013 My dad is a lawyer, so we're pretty wealthy. My parents are extremely strict on what I buy. So yeah. I had $60, but I kinda spent 20 dollars annnnnnd yeah... I'm not much of a money saver... And that's how I ended up in this padded cell PR
Auratic March 30, 2013 March 30, 2013 You're kind of lucky that your mother doesn't "borrow" the money that you save and never pay you back. And I think we'll pass on being in the group picture. brb college

PaintTool SAI has a 30-day free trial, but there are some other more dubious methods you could use to obtain it after the trail ends. Or buy it, it's like 5000 yen or something. I should'ave read the rest of the thread before I typed all this... For a cheap but effective art tablet this one is pretty good. It's also bundled with Photoshop and a few other things. For $100, it's a really good buy. My bro uses it and it's pretty amazing. About your parents, if you make it really obvious that being an artist is you number 1 hobby, it shouldn't be that hard to smooth-talk them into letting you purchase a tablet. However, everyone's parents are different, so my advice could be a pretty awful suggestion.
Allison the Tulpa March 30, 2013 Author March 30, 2013 I'll try. Everyone with a tablet, quick give me realllllllly amazing reasons why artists should have one! And that's how I ended up in this padded cell PR
Avalanche March 30, 2013 March 30, 2013 In the long run it's cheaper than buying stacks and stacks of artists paper, pens, pencils, colours, paints, erasers. ($100 dollars now compared to $1000s over the years.) The art you wish to create is intended to go online, making a tablet the easiest way to achieve this.. It's much much more compact and less messy than art tools.. Being able to use a tablet and all it's functions is an actual skill you can put on your CV, if you were going for a designing career.. When was the last time you asked for anything like this? frt

It's a way to express yourself artistically and hone your talents. It also unlocks the door to the many options available in digital art, while traditional art is quite limited.

Another (open source and free) program you can try is mypaint: http://mypaint.intilinux.com/?page_id=6 My parents are qute exactly like you described yours, and I think they will buy you a tablet if you annoy them long enough about it :p (with annoy I mean explaining why you want/need a tablet, that it's a great hobby, etc.)
