Kiahdaj April 24, 2013 April 24, 2013 My brother has claimed for the last several years that he doesn't have a mind's eye. That he cannot visualize anything. That when he is told to think of a specific object, no picture pops into his mind. He still has dreams normally, like everyone else. Does this sound possible to you? Do you know anyone who also claims not to have a mind's eye? "If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."
Guest Anonymous April 24, 2013 April 24, 2013 I suppose it would be possible to not have a minds eye if you went through brain damage or something similar, like being blind, but if that was the case I think it would most certainly affect dreams, and maybe normal vision, too. But I don't think he went through anything like that? And dreams are nothing but mind's eye, right? If he can see them it means he has one. If he remembers what he saw isn't that mind's eye, too? I think he might just have a very un-reacting immagination. (Then again I have very little idea about the innerworkings of the brain and barely know anything about this guy)
Kiahdaj April 24, 2013 Author April 24, 2013 I had often wondered whether he was lying, or maybe if he just didn't grasp the concept. He might be under the impression that it's very clear, and overlaps your real vision, which is, of course, not the case. He has never undergone any notable head trauma, in the past. I've had more head trauma than he has, honestly. And I too would think that not having a mind's eye would affect dreams, but again, I'm certainly no expert. "If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. Sands April 24, 2013 April 24, 2013 I think he probably just doesn't get what it is or has bad visualizing skills that could be trained. I guess he has chosen not to use it at all so it's fucking awful level 0 tulpamancing shit. Maybe it's possible for someone to not have it, but I'm not sure what would make it so he couldn't imagine a thing but could see dreams. mordred April 24, 2013 April 24, 2013 it took me quite some time to see more than nothing on purpose. it was easy for me to "imagine" the action of the quote "harry potter jumps onto his broomstick", although I could not really see more than a faint memory of a scene from the movie; and trying to think about something like "a cat" yielded no result- even though I could clearly describe the cat itself, despite seeing nothing. kind of like conceptual-based imagination rather than visual-based. ask him to think of a cat then describe the cat clearly. if he can and sees nothing, then he's the same as I was last year. sage
Guest Anonymous April 24, 2013 April 24, 2013 I believe it's "possible" not to have a mind's eye, but I see it too unlikely to be talked about. I think what he's working with is an "untrained" mind's eye. Not taking advantage of it when he was young and practicing the use of it while the mind was fresh and new. If you can have any memorial recolection of past events, even flashes, then you've got a mind's eye. If you can visualize what happens in a book, you've got a mind's eye. If you've ever fantisized about that slut down the street with the crimson hair, you've got a mind's eye.
Kiahdaj April 24, 2013 Author April 24, 2013 I've always had a pretty lousy mind's eye. I've always seen things more conceptually. Well, I'd describe it more like feeling what is there. That is why I have trouble remembering faces, because they are detailed, and I can't see very well. Even despite that, I can see some. So maybe it could be as easy as him trying a lot, as that is what increases quality in visualization anyway. If he's interested I might just get him to try some exercises, daily. "If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."

It took me months to stop distorting my tulpa's nose. It must be all the visual novels I read- I must have forgotten how noses looked on actual people. sage
