So as far as I'm aware, A. D. stands for After Death (as in the death of christ)

And the opposite is usually B. C. for Before Christ.

 

And then people got mad about involving theology so someone had the idea of the "Common era", which just so happens to line up with Before Christ, and then B. C. E. for Before Common Era which could then be shortened to B. C.

 

So baisically the reason I didn't get your joke was because it was "Before After Death"
