It's "Anno Domini". "After Death" is more of a mnemonic for people who don't want to bother with Latin than anything else.

Well, I was sortof right in that it is originally religious.

 

The term anno Domini is Medieval Latin, which means in the year of the Lord

 

But I guess technically Before A. D. does sortof make sense, ignoring the mixing of languages. The good thing about looking like an idiot: I learned something!
