Embeds are out of control

Question

Posted (edited)

First of all, there's no settings to control your embedded media sizes (except images, but the way to do it - holding Ctrl and right clicking - is neither very apparent nor, seemingly, possible on mobile). So like, that's no good already, but now that I've taken a look at the Let's Discuss Video Games thread, I see there's other types of embeds that are somehow several times as bad. I took an example picture of what a youtube embed looked like in that thread (for posterity's sake if it's fixed), but the embedded Reddit thread at the top wouldn't fit in THREE screencaps if I tried, lol. I just checked and it's actually four full screens' worths of space, on a 1920x1080 monitor. Here's the Youtube vid though:

(Again, note this is an entire 1920x1080 monitor; the screenspace this embed takes is downright intimidating)

So basically, we need some settings for embeds (mainly videos), and we should probably disable page embeds for Reddit posts and basically all other sites, just sticking to the basics like Youtube and images.

If we can't do that (youtube embed sizes), alternatively you could just shrink the default embed size down to something more reasonable, like 800x460 or whatever the ratio is. But the Reddit embed is not only totally pointless (why would we need to embed reddit threads?), but also waaaaaaaaay too big.

Oh, and as you see in Flandre's post on that page, old URLs to Youtube videos (and probably anything else that embeds) are still automatically embedding in full, as opposed to being links with text. ie instead of link to video, we get

and then, if we happened to actually embed the video afterwards for whatever reason, we get another one right after the broken [video=youtube ] thing. This auto-embedding problem removes all sorts of tact that's been used on the forum for years and would be very, very nice to fix. I think it'll reflect kind of poorly (I'd get the impression a forum was old and broken as a newcomer) on the forum if it's not fixed, anyways.

Edit: This is a personal opinion, but, if no other choice is available I'd almost prefer to remove video embeds entirely - more reasonably only the automatic embedding, retaining an option TO embed, if that's possible? - rather than have those embedded videos, no matter how small, completely breaking the flow of every single paragraph/line of text that's ever linked to a video. When only intending a link (ex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5Esz3S3FL0) it's annoying, but when writing the link into text perhaps as an optional example of something, it's incredibly annoying (note I'm referring to all cases of Youtube linking in the past 8 years and their conversion into exclusively embeds now, links post-migration are fine aside from being massive)

This is still a problem, partially so for Youtube embeds (are they massive for mobile users? I imagine they might be?), but especially so for other-site embeds like Reddit (reminder of the ridiculous example in the Video Games thread) and Twitter (example here, I guess, it's not ultra-massive but it's pretty big, probably moreso on mobile). And even in the ultra-massive example, you can't say people should just use discretion because it was applied to the whole forum retroactively. Without an ability to manually resize embeds (again I believe exclusively images have that ability, but it's totally hidden behind like, ctrl+right click?), it would definitely be better to just disable these sorts of embeds entirely, or at least all aside from Youtube embeds.

I'll open a ticket with envision community about the Reddit embeds.

I added custom CSS to limit the YouTube view, tell me what you think and suggest a better size if it doesn't work out.

Right now I'm using:

.ipsEmbeddedVideo iframe {
    max-height: 400px;
    max-width: 700px;

}

.ipsEmbeddedVideo.ipsEmbeddedVideo_limited > div, .ipsEmbeddedVideo:not( .ipsEmbeddedVideo_limited ){
  padding-bottom: 400px;
  max-width: 60% !important;
  margin: auto;
}

The YouTube enbeds are much better, even though they feel a little big for me. That's probably because I have a smaller laptop screen though.

For whatever strange reason, the YouTube videos look tall and skinny on mobile, even when I request the desktop site. I like the idea of having YouTube embeds on mobile, but it may be easier to turn off YouTube embeds for mobile entirely like the myBB software did.

well I don't know about the mobile theme, but the mobile on dark mode was just fine. I also just remembered that I've been using desktop mode on mobile this entire time

Looks good to me, although even a static size is questionable in some scenarios, this is what I had in mind. Again, not a mobile user, so we'll need you guys who are to report what's broken on your end

Also don't forget about the double embed in the thread I linked, where Flandre posted the same video back to back. Old in-text URLs like this got converted to full embeds, which while I don't know how exactly to fix, is technically something this forum software fully supports.

I was starting to type my response to another post and the post I quoted had a lot of images in it. While I was going through and deleting the images, out of nowhere this menu popped up:

image.thumb.png.ac1f63b72ab5120ec442171c10cb151d.png

And huzzah! I figured out how this works. To resize an image, simply double click on it. I'm not sure if this is possible to do on mobile yet, but I am very excited about this accidental discovery.

If you guys find any images that are huge, report them, PM me, or tell me and I will resize them.

oh, double clicking works? it said to ctrl+right click I think which is what we've done

still, you can't do this for youtube embeds. also, our (all americans'?) youtube embeds have stopped embedding entirely, saying an error occurred on youtube.com...

Crtl + right click often gets overridden by Chrome's right click menu, but I managed to get it to work after multiple attempts.

I don't recall having issues with embeds, usually reposting the embed link fixes the problem. I can try posting a YouTube video real quick...
