If other people portray tulpas in a way we don't like, we should portray it ourselves

...You know, the number of aspies on this site is way below the number on the other site I'm on. So that's one debunked stereotype.

 

I talked about Asperger because Sam said she has it in the MTV crap, and I think this is a special case, therefore not representative of the Tulpamancy community :). No offence meant tho.

 

 

About ideas of script or format, I would have thought some kind of documentary, with a narrator voice explaining the basics at first, what it is, where it comes from etc. And then a bunch of interviews pretty much like in Tulpaudcast, with or without video, to present ourselves and show how tups affect our lives in a good way :)

Format and theme?

 

I don't think I'd be good at that. My first idea is a q and a, where several questions get answered in two minute sections, with a professional host outlining the answer, and a few choice comments from the community.

 

Questions like:

--You have two people in your head? WTF?

--Do you have to be insane to hear voices, or just crazy?

--So... You do this for fun?

 

^ Documentary format is better. But that is like an hour long format. Documentaries are also narrative driven, with a guiding question that transforms as the episode progresses.

I think this is a really great idea. I don't think that tulpa stuff is ever gonna be considered normal by the masses at large but having our own version of information is better than relying on shitty clickbait media to do it for us.

 

I don't think I'd like to be involved in any interviews or anything since I'd flip if anyone in my life figured out I had a tulpa but I think this is a cool thing to do. An hour long documentary would be good but you'd need a lot of cover footage and shit.

 

Has anyone thought of reaching out to the podcast community to get on other people's shows? I know jean-luc has his tulpaudcast but maybe if we got members of the community who are well spoken on other smaller shows that could help us branch out and it'd be a little more solid to be able to say that it's not all self produced media that has the message we wanna be sending.

I think it would be fun for individual users to make videos regarding themselves and their tulpas, if only for understanding them better or retaining a shard of the culture and understanding of the time for posterity. Yet given the (overtly reasonable) opposition to anything remotely clicking of mental disturbance, I'm afeared the execution would be just as, if not more embarrassing than what was seen on the Music Television interview. Have you ever considered that the way they edited the footage just wasn't out of sensational goals for ratings, but also to save face for the interviewee? If the broadcasted portions were so awful, what of the scenes they did cut?

 

Good attention may stir better perception, or a perception from a larger demographic of persons, yet the converse also applies to that which shall awaken or alert those seeking to encroach upon or quash the efforts so many have constructively lent thus far.

 

The current administration has its own dirty laundry, and more infamous users like Koomer or Mistgod will only serve to affirm the preconceptions of those who have chanced upon this community's existence before and sway the undecided away from the already tenuous position held by the more charitable understandings of who we are.

 

I agree that portrayal ought to be a personal endeavour, yet if this is the case, need it be as direct and in-your-face as video and audio interviews? I'm biased in that I prefer more cerebral and literary mediums, those intentionally distanced from solidifying a user's appearance, voice, et cetera, yet I think this adds one more layer of objectivity and credibility if done correctly. Likewise, if an investigator has the patience to distill our thoughts from our deliberate and pre-meditated entries, it also leaves more definitive conclusions (with much less room for any prejudices regarding certain aspects of our identities), for better or worse.

I suggest doing a series. Starting from the simplest of things and a Q/A and in later episodes switching to interviews(first talking about general things and preferably about long term life with tulpas and stuff like that eventually), maybe even some talks with people who are sceptical or outside of the comunity entirely could work as well.

 

Do not, and i repeat DO NOT speak of mental illness in the first interview you do, probably not in the second either. First impressions are very important when talking people, and you can never predict what they will take away as important from "I am mentaly ill, tulpas helped me" (That could easily mean "People with tulpas are mentally ill" or "Mentally ill people are the ones who would want to create tulpas").

 

Never use the word "Wonderland" it's a bit too silly to just throw at people. Use mindscape or whatever instead, something that immediately sounds serious without an explaination is always better.

 

Format wise, video is the only way, nearly everyone watches videos these days. IRL video? Diagrams and studies? Animation? honestly all of those could work but if you want to be more convincing for the public there should be atleast a bit of IRL in it. After you have done a video writing an article somewhere which links to it at the end is a pretty good idea too.

 

Every single video should link to the first one at the start, preferably with a bit of a talk as to why(10-20 seconds at most). While the copy paste thing on every video gets annoying very quickly, its ussefullness outweights the annoyance.

Yep. This communitiy's eyes are bigger than it's stomach. I think I and my host could script our way around an entire pbs-style documentary, but the hard part would be in the editing room, and you would have to interview multiple people to get enough material.

 

There is a balancing act here, as well. If we want a lot of eyeballs on this, it will need to be sensationalised to a degree. We also think an impartial take would be cringey all on its own. Really, it's all how you ask the questions. Don't get the interviewees or presenters on the defensive, the piece comes off as positive, and gives a positive impression.

 

I think you could fill up five minutes with three questions, or maybe if you just want one guy talking, fifteen rapid fire FAQ questions.

 

If you need complex CG visualisations, there is a small chance I could deliver one for this project.

Exactly what I had in mind. My idea for a video was set up as a ~5 minute Youtube video aimed at the people who will watch it, it was pretty casual (which is part of the desired effect) but covered most bases in enough detail to give a general idea of what tulpamancy's like, from creation to accompanying life, and in my version I don't remember if I covered switching. The problem with that is, my explanation makes sense. But it is absolutely not a universal explanation, and people would then think of switching like I do, which may upset other tulpamancers (ie. absolutely will. Not necessarily you guys, but..).

 

I'm a crazy perfectionist though, coupled with my lack of motivation, means doing things like this is very rare for me. It would also have to be me, I'm not letting Tewi make the video, partly because I'd be talking as the main content and the rest because I have some form of pride and that would just feel wrong. Considering I planned on briefly covering my own tulpas and my relationships to them anyways.
