Guest September 4, 2016 September 4, 2016 Joined together? With no redundancy? I hope you have all that data backed up... I personally have many many gigs of fairly important projects saved on an SSD and nowhere else, because I like to live on the edge. Should consider investing in a backup drive, huh.
jean-luc September 4, 2016 September 4, 2016 External drives are surprisingly cheap, and they're just about as plug-and-play as you can get. Backup your shit before it's too late! It turns a horrible day with complete loss of irreplaceable things into a minor annoyance. ... because I like to live on the edge. Is it really? Are you sure it's not just because you're too lazy? Luminesce September 4, 2016 September 4, 2016 ssshhh its fine just forget about it. Focus on other things. It's an Undertale reference, shows up in the dialogue box in a fight where the menus themselves can hurt you. I was wondering if theirs was actually a reference or not. Hi! I'm actually broke right now and will be for the foreseeable future, but I might have a couple random drives laying around somewhere, I'll need to do some digging. In other news, wanna fuck song here. So hard. So hard
jean-luc September 4, 2016 September 4, 2016 I spent far too long figuring out if any literal interpretation of that would be possible. Best I could figure is sticking a speaker in an orifice. As for backups, check for drives like you said, and also consider online storage. I think google will give you a bunch of space for free in exchange for your information/soul. AWS EC2 is prorated (charged by exact usage instead of monthly), so you get charged for uploading, charged for downloading, and charged per gigabyte stored for a month. Overall it's pretty darn cheap, and they have a free tier of %GB. The only problem is that it can be a bit esoteric. Stats is back: https://stats.jean-luc.org/ My visits to tulpa.info are chaotic. Guest September 5, 2016 September 5, 2016 I don't own any speakers I'm brave enough to try shoving up my ass (My monitors alone are like, 21 inches tall, and a foot wide, a bit more on length), so maybe just, do my best to melt a disc and--- you know what, no more I'm wary of uploading stuff to online places because there's just so much, and I do actually have a 350 gig cap on my internet. It's like $10 more than what we're currently paying for unlimited, but I'm not the one that pays it so there's nothing I can do, I guess. In other news, the scroll wheel on my mouse's click went out. I'm irked. I use the middle click more than almost any button on this thing, but I guess that would explain it, huh. It's an MMO mouse though, so I guess I can just, idunno, assign that to something else, but it's gonna take ages to get used to it again. I should probably just end it now tbh
jean-luc September 5, 2016 September 5, 2016 well than the simple solution is to simply not have any data that you care about /s Stats is back: https://stats.jean-luc.org/ My visits to tulpa.info are chaotic. If you want me to see something, make sure to quote a post of mine or ping me @jean-luc
Luminesce September 5, 2016 September 5, 2016 I just refrain from doing stupid things. Haven't bothered with any real form of backups in my whole life and I live on computers. It would just annoy me if my last massive backup was missing the last bunch of files I'd downloaded, installed, organized, whatever. Technically my SSD and hard drive have mostly the same files on them at this point, but my hard drive is missing a ton of music. I should probably copy that over.. or stop saving music to my SSD in the first place.. Anyways. If my computer burns down in a house fire I'll just pick back up with the essentials. Install chrome, skype 6.18, steam, hopefully sync my ipod onto my computer (will they let you do that?), and then just get things as I need them from there. My pictures are 80% backed up on my hard drive and like 50% on my old-old hard drive that barely works, but honestly I could find them again. That'd.. suck. But see, that's why we keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Hi! I'm Lumi, host of Reisen, Tewi, Flandre and Lucilyn. Everyone deserves to love and be loved. It's human nature. Kiahdaj September 5, 2016 September 5, 2016 Backups aren't really about doing stupid things, or disasters like fires. Common drives can have as high as around 8% annual failure rates or higher. You can't even count on new drives, because they are subject to higher failure rates due to infant mortality, than in the following years. You're probably more likely to lose a drive to natural causes than a disaster. It can be very annoying to have accidentally not backed some things up, but I'd certainly expect it's less annoying than not having it backed up in general. "If this can be avoided, it should. If it can't, then it would be better if it could be. If it happened and you're thinking back to it, try and think back further. Try not to avoid it with your mind. If any of this is possible, it may be helpful. If not, it won't be."
jean-luc September 9, 2016 September 9, 2016 In the case of hard drives, it's not a matter of if it fails, it's a matter of when it fails.
