Am I starting in the right direction?

This is very similar to what happened to me whenever I first tried my hand at making a tulpa. I've been a maladaptive daydreamer since I was a kid, so for me it was very easy to conjure up another entity in my head, considering I'm so used to imagining multiple different people and creatures while daydreaming. So it could be that, it's basically what everyone else is saying.

 

So my advice to you is to keep doing what you're doing because even if you are puppeting, your tulpa will be independent eventually. I think you're making great progress so far.
