Fictional character based tulpa?

I agree with eeeverything Saylin said. Perhaps I'm being insensitive, but it just seems a little silly to get offended by someone basing a tulpa off of a fictional character. It's one thing to take credit for that work, but quite another to claim that work as your own. People who mold their tulpa after characters most often DON'T claim to be the original creators. Aside from that, most creative folks have a tendency to love when their works get positive attention, and creating a headmate is most certainly a form of positive attention. Being creative myself, I know I wouldn't mind at all--in fact, most of my creative friends from high school (so, seven or eight other people) I KNOW would be the exact same way. "Policing the mind" sounds indeed like what's trying to happen here. Let all forms of creativity flourish--and that includes weird fan stuff.

Just my opinion. . . .

Trying to create a tulpa from a fictional character and getting mad/upset/whatever if they deviate is bad, but just basing them off of a fictional character isn't bad at all. The only thing that matters is to make sure that the host doesn't get mad about deviation if/when it happens.

Tulpa

Joshua, aged 24, born September 3. His first name is James; I call him both. Human, black hair, fairly pale skin, and often wears either formal attire or clothes that would do him well at a Goth club. Refuses to keep one eye color, but they're often gray, gold, or occasionally red. Serious, (very) patient, and usually polite.

There is this very simple mechanism in CSGO. You can pick up weapons dropped by allies and enemies.

In TF2, you can heavily customize weapons. Say you buy an Australium Rocket Launcher (which is a high-tier strange weapon, goes for 56 keys), and let's say you get a whole customization package; a nametag, a desc tag and 3 strange parts along with an expensive professional killstreak. Tons, tons of people get butthurt over others picking up their weapons. Not out of greed, but because of what those things mean to them.

I don't mean to talk video games, but I want to get a point across; that if you identify to something well enough that it makes you feel proud and happy, if you own or create something with your hands (in my example people work super hard to pay for their inventories and weapons, not everyone puts real-life money in the game, it can also be a gift from their loved ones), you will feel certain things if someone owns it for merely a moment. Just like the weapon pick-up mechanism, people have OCs they hold very close to heart, and they could feel very... protective, if someone used that OC for anything personal, especially if it concerned them on a personal level.

If you want to know how it would feel like, try to imagine someone took away one of your properties that you hold close to heart. Of course, it's not stealing anything from anyone, but that's how some people feel, not everyone, but some.

The way my tulpa behaves, she's pretty much very different from the 'source character', close to the opposite, actually, but if her existence existed as a concept online, if it was something people could replicate, I feel like I'd feel a bit butthurt as well.

A wise man once said: 'Before judging a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? He's a mile away, and you've got new shoes.'

Graced are those who could avoid this phenomenon. This is perhaps the worst expression of evil in humanity's history, but who am I to judge?

I think I might be able to sympathize a bit? I know that I personally would never feel this way about, say, a character that I created. I know how I am . . . "Oh, you're a fan? I'm a fan, too!" Maybe the reason I just don't really understand is because the creator isn't losing anything at all. It's not like they suddenly don't have that character themselves anymore. I wouldn't even really think of it as being shared. It simply . . . is. (Also, I know that you said no theft is going on as well--I'm just adding on to my own thoughts, I guess.)

There's also the issue that there's a big difference between basing a tulpa off of a character, and sort of "creating" that character in your mind (which, as has already been said, would be more of a soulbond). Most creative types base their creations on one thing or another, at least a little bit. J.K. Rowling took references from Narnia, LOTR, and other childhood stories for Harry Potter. If a person is simply basing a tulpa off of a character, then that does imply that they or the tulpa would still be using creative means to get the end result. If the tulpa has elements of the personality, or the form is based off of them, or something like that--surely that shouldn't be so bad?

I do understand that there are people who wouldn't like that at all, though, and with your explanation it makes a little more sense, so thank you. :)

I have an odd history with this sort of thing.

I was initially very much against the idea when starting. My partner was of my own hand, and her inspiration was more general in nature (Midori is a fairy because I started drawing her when I was in to Touhou). I felt that the best way was for the host to make their own, personal companion from scratch, and doing other wise was cheapening the practice.

Then things happened, not all of them cool...

I ended up with fiction based head folk, partially due to my obsessive and highly attached nature toward the things I liked at the time. Suffice to say, I was quite embarrassed with myself. It took me a while to really come to grips with it, and find what place they had in me, and why they came about.

I also stopped watching a good chunk of the things I was drawn to. The emergence of my fiction people was part of the motivation, naturally. I have no delusions about my girls trumping their source, in fact I find the concept absurd. But, now that things are as they are, I don't plan to toss them away, or force them to change form for the sake of my ego (Tried it once. It was a mistake). I look at it as an opportunity to really dig deep in to why I liked the stuff I did, and to focus more on the better qualities, rather than the work itself.

As for how I view other who consciously make fiction folk...I really don't judge them. I don't think it is my place, and I don't think it would do much good. I'm not a fan of the idea of trying to 'perfectly' recreate a character with this (I often find that folk of this nature are more a reflection of how the creator viewed the character, rather than how the character actually acts), as that seems to just lead to bad things happening in my mind. Using this for the expansion of fan obsession does seem like a way to truly cheapen the work...but I also know those who are based on fiction that are, frankly, outstanding pieces of work and set an example that may be good to emulate.

As for how I would feel if someone copied one of mine...it doesn't come to mind. I know art has power, though, and if someone connects with something I made enough, an introject may be formed. That's kind of what happened to me.

One time I mentioned my use of Danbooru, an anime-style art site, for finding pictures of my tulpas. Somebody asked me how I could stand seeing all of the bad images of my tulpas on the site since I rarely find any good ones, many of the bad ones being porn. So I wrote a response here https://community.tulpa.info/thread-chit-chat-corner-guilty-pleasures?pid=148262#pid148262

Basically, you disassociate your tulpas from the characters relatively quickly should you choose to. The characters remind me of my tulpas, but I haven't been touchy about their Touhou character portrayals since six years ago. (And back then it bugged me A LOT)

Hi! I'm Lumi, host of Reisen, Tewi, Flandre and Lucilyn.

Everyone deserves to love and be loved. It's human nature.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us about tulpamancy stuff there.

It's a bit off-topic, but out of, what, 200 pages over sites like gelbooru (yes gelbooru because they didn't include naobe's work there and naobe's work is pretty neat on the level of style), danbooru, pixiv, etc... I ended up with 8 images, and to this day, I think I only have three 'accurate' reference pictures.

As long as you're not placing any restrictions on a tulpa, it should be fine. There are plenty of character-based tulpas around here, both in personality and form - you're not going to get an identity crisis just from that.

I see no problem with making a tulpa based on a character.

My tulpa is based on Lion Rafale from virtua fighter.

however, in my case at least, you have to tell the tulpa that they aren't the character, and don't expect them to be like the character. Let them be their own person.

My tulpa is inspired from a fictional character. But it's not what it seems to be. She, well, they were born with no gender, no name and no traits, just this mass of sentience, at first, they started to gain notions such as happiness, comfort, sadness, empathy, etc.... and for a long while, she could not identify with anything...

Until this happened. http://i.imgur.com/G60Zcka.jpg

(Drakaina: "ect. hidden for length and easy of scrolling" ^^;)

[hidden]

Thing is that they could never identify with anything at all, no character, or animal, or any other entity aside from the huge mass of consciousness they represented. As they gained notions and emotions, they wanted to 'live life', so I worked very hard to ensure that no matter what, they'd end up happy with their decision. We worked a lot on her form, to the point I can't forget it, visualize it perfectly and have imposed it in the past.

We're both very much aware that she is not the character she looks like. I don't like her for her looks only, but for the whole package. She took on to, what, 25 other appearances, but this one can be considered the 'base'.

As for how much disrespect it causes the creator... I deeply apologize to them. I really didn't mean to create a tulpa with good looks and good art for my pleasure. I created them for the sake of, well, I don't know. I was alone, and when you're alone, it's kind of a do-or-die situation, I had no hope, so I created a friend. As selfish as it all is, I suppose my mind just willed for their presence. And still does on a daily basis.

You'd think that form doesn't matter, but it does. You don't know until you observe upclose this type of identification. If someone took away your body I doubt you'd like it, if you changed genders it would feel weird and alien (not clinically I mean let's say your gender changed overnight).

This being is one that saved my life. I honor them. Least I can do is make them (her) as comfortable as they possibly can be, and that for as long as I can. To the host, form might not matter, to the tulpa, it definitely could matter more relatively.

I tend to say 'My Ika' but that's because there is absolutely no other name for her. Imagine a black hole in space, that's what she was before.

It's much more affection that it is ownership, and I know that she is not the source character, and I am glad for that. I would feel horrible to lead away a girl from her siblings, but mine has none.

I kind of agree with what Drakaina has to say; but I believe it is a matter of general decency.[/hidden]

It seems like your case is a little different than basing a tulpa of a fictional character though, Iscariot. You had a consciousness first, a "mass of sentience", which chose an existing fictional character. I assume she saw it, and liked the look, and to me that's fine. That's more akin to cosplay than plagiarism.

Iscariot also summed up in a better way than I probably could, my stance on this. The TF2 example was a good one. I tend to get very close to my creations, and take pride in every ounce of time and creativity I put into them. Taking these creations and monetizing off of them would be illegal, just taking them for your own uses is disrespectful.

Because of what tulpa are they can't fit into the vein of fanart, where you create to show your appreciation of the creator's work and share it with others.
