How to handle creating a tulpa based off of a fictional character (many clarifying questions)

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming that it's better to make sure the tulpa knows that they're based off of a character and can deviate as much as they like, rather than just going "Oh, yeah, you're that guy and nothing else. Sorry." How much emphasis should be put on this? Is it OK to be like "hey, that's you!" when engaging with the source material (with the implication that it's OK if they aren't exactly the same or even end up very different), or is that too much pressure? I should definitely avoid implying that they know the other characters from the media in a personal way, right? The main thing is that I'm just trying to use the character as a starting point/base. I don't want to accidentally push the original character onto them too hard and cause stress, especially with things like memories.

I've seen people say not to force negative traits onto them when attempting to develop their personality. I understand that if I were to make a list of the intended traits I shouldn't put any of the negative ones on the list, but should I also, like, separate the negative traits from the character the tulpa is based on? Make them based on only the positive traits of the character? I don't know how to word that properly, so hopefully it makes sense.

Sorry if I used any words wrong or said anything disrespectful.

One of my tulpas is based off of a character I made for a text based MMO game that heavily emphasizes on role playing. The game character itself is loosely based off of a character from an anime. The tulpa in question doesn't care too much about all that, she knows she's her own person. She finds it amusing to come across art of that original anime character, and is generally fond of fictional characters that share similar features to them. I think your approach is fine and you can do what you think is appropriate, and talk with the tulpa down the road when they become vocal/sapient to figure out the details.

A lot of times positive human personality traits may come with a negative side. I think having some minor negative traits (such as shyness, outspokenness, or being a neat freak, etc) is fine because they are often just extensions of the other positive traits that make up a person/tulpa, just don't include significantly negative traits such as depression, cruelty or whatever. You can try looking up material that studies human personality traits to get a better idea of this, and also to analyze the fictional character that you're basing your tulpa off of.

This site has info on the the different myers-briggs personality types that you can browse through, and also a test you can take - you can answer the test questions based on how you think your tulpa would respond, and get an idea on what sort of strength and weakness their personality type has - https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

This book has a different personality system, one that I personally find easier to understand and work with - https://www.amazon.com/Surrounded-Idiots-Behavior-Effectively-Communicate/dp/1250179939

If you're really worried or don't wanna go too deep in studying human personality, maybe just imagine how the fictional character you're using would be like if they matured and learned to tone down their negative traits, and use that as a base for your tulpa. Anyway, hopefully I was able to help a bit.
