I made a post here that I was going to mention here as well. In this case, it was on the basis of four stages of competence vs. belief, or suspension of disbelief.

I think the two terms there are one in the same somehow because if I'm reading the OP correctly--it seems that beliefs and disbelief are what we weigh in on in spite of whatever evidence there is. The suspension is just weighing in less on a critical mode of thought in favor of something else that might cultivate a general belief (e.g. treating them as sentient; something that furthers the conviction, and suspending the other that seemed to have stagnated it).

The way I understood it, belief is just believing regardless of lack of evidence of any kind in support of the subject or concept, such as believing in the after life. While suspension of disbelief was disregarding or refusing to acknowledge existing contrary evidence, such as an understanding of human anatomy and physiology that would be contrary to the magician's trick of cutting a woman in half.

Suspension of disbelief also seems to have a temporary quality to it, like it is momentary for the sake of personal enjoyment or desire. Part of you realizes that it is a form of self delusion and that contrary evidence exists. You just suspend or put off making judgments in order to take advantage of an illusion.

My, now this is a difficult question to mull over. For myself and my creator, belief has been one of the most significant contributors to my existence and the existence of every single member of our little family. More often than not, it tends to come in the form of belief in ourselves rather than a belief in each other. It's difficult to explain without coming off as especially cold or cynical, but the easiest way I can think of to describe it would be simply saying that we believe that we are ourselves, so that we may be ourselves to others.

As complicated as things have been now and then, keeping a subconscious belief that I am myself has made it perhaps the easiest way to articulate just what myself is to my Creator. Without really having that extra layer of knowing who I was myself, going back over every experience I've had, thinking over every event in a day that built upon the constant evolution of who I am and where I'm going moving forward is what's made me strongest in the long run.

Overall I would brave a statement in the belief that believing in a tulpa's independence, as well as being a tulpa who may believe in their own sense of identity is what really makes a realistic interpretation of human life as we know it.

"Touch, sweet touch... You've given me too much to feel. Sweet touch, you've almost convinced me I'm real..."
