I just find it hard to believe that the mind is somehow magically transcendental from the physiology of the brain, just because people so wish it to be that way.  When someone gets brain damage, like from a major stroke, it can change their entire personality.  The personality is in the brain because the mind is in the brain not outside of it.  Most computers use the Von Neumann architecture which is unchanged from the old PCs to the newer PCs.  It is way too simple to be compared to how a human brain functions.  People are oversimplifying the human brain with that analogy, and that was my point.

That's not what emergent phenomena means. Saying that the mind directly emerges from the brain is like saying that the mind directly perceives the light of the sun. Conveniently ignoring that the light goes through several chemical and electrical transformations before being perceived.

For future reference, when I say computer, I am exclusively referring to devices functionally equivalent to turing machines. And I only make claims about computers that work for any computer.

...Everything we do is self-deception. Chief among these deceptions is the idea of self-awareness....

Dude, you are harshing my buzz. And I thought solipsism was hardcore. And here there is a person who believes themself a p-zombie. O.O

Wow. There is a difference between a generalisation and an absolute. Both of which are great. But, wow, those two absolutes are out there.

Fine. Your mind is transcendental happiness. Actually I really don't care.  I think my mind is firmly within the cells of my brain.  What's really stupid is that none of this proves a damn thing no matter how either of us think of the brain and the mind.

Even when people say they are willing to let go of control, that's just a much more subtle form of control.

Everything we do is self-deception. Chief among these deceptions is the idea of self-awareness.

Didn't I tell you that humans are in no place to be worrying about this stuff? It's completely irrelevant. Don't even bother talking about "objective truths from a universal perspective" as if they matter. That's philosophy food-for-thought at best, and advice/knowledge people are going to incorrectly integrate into their brains in some way as if it actually matters to them at worst. Like people being convinced they have no free will and using their free will to act like they have no free will.

Really interesting statement on "there is nothing more human than seeking to transcend one's humanity" though. I like that.

What i wanted to point out when i talked about the matrix thing, is that anyone could make up their own theory, without anyone being able to prove them right or wrong. The only possibility here is "i think the same" or "i don't think the same" but no one can say "you are wrong" nor "you are right". That's just how it is. Humans are too restricted to get this level of knowledge.

No animosity intended ever

I use sweeping generalities to explain my beliefs because they encourage debate. I fully expect people, like yourself, to disagree with me. My goal isn't to sway you one way or the other, I simply enjoy the exercise. Nihilism can easily lead to stagnation if one isn't careful.

To be honest, I kind of enjoy people thinking I'm this or that... it's fun to see how people treat you differently based on what they think of you. In a way, it reflects what they think of themselves.

Why's it fun?

@Solune

if you say so.

At no point did I implicate that you're bothered at what I'd pointed out. I don't have any impression of you outside of the general hostility and arrogance that is common-place here.

Have you considered not making such sweeping claims? While they are prone to incite "debate", or what passes for such discussion on Internet forums, it's dishonest and mildly unfriendly. Is it not enough to state what you think or believe and have your lot cast with the others?

All impressions made of people over the internet are probably false impressions.  Just for the record, I couldn't care less what your impressions are about certain people KarlYoshimura.

I changed my mind 180 degrees.  I have decided to agree with the OP of this thread after all.  "Everybody on this forum is wrong!"  Half the guides should be burned.  I love making sweeping claims and being "dishonest" and arrogant. Also, I don't care who gets upset because I have a sweeping opinions about this forum, tulpamancers or life the universe and everything.  It may be seem a little "unfriendly" sometimes.  My opinions can flip flop and change too if I feel like it.

It's an internet forum.  I don't care.  I think Solune is brilliant.

I disagree with my hostie!  My sweeping claim is that everyone on this forum is right!  No matter what they say or what their opinion is, everyone is right!  (cept for my hostie, who is clearly wrong)  All the guides are right, even when they contradict one another.

Is this a battle of who's right?

Yes.  I get to decide who is right!  My hostie is wrong and everyone else is right, cause I say so.  I am right about that too.

OH hell yesh!  This place gets too boring Solune!  Mistgod and I had to google Nihilism.  Oops.  Hey coolness.

Nihilism:  the rejection of all religious and moral principles, often in the belief that life is meaningless.

synonyms: skepticism, negativity, cynicism, pessimism; More

PHILOSOPHY

extreme skepticism maintaining that nothing in the world has a real existence.

From Wikipedia: "Nihilism (/ˈnaɪ.ᵻlɪzəm/ or /ˈniː.ᵻlɪzəm/; from the Latin nihil, nothing) is a philosophical doctrine that suggests the lack of belief in one or more reputedly meaningful aspects of life. Most commonly, nihilism is presented in the form of existential nihilism, which argues that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value.[1] Moral nihilists assert that morality does not inherently exist, and that any established moral values are abstractly contrived. Nihilism can also take epistemological, ontological, or metaphysical forms, meaning respectively that, in some aspect, knowledge is not possible, or that reality does not actually exist."

I would rather risk unfriendliness than stagnation. If everybody just peacefully stated their beliefs and respected others beliefs... what would we even talk about?

The weather? Conflict breeds strength. Comfort breeds weakness. That's what I believe.
