Relationship Titles

Daily (?) thread #2

What sort of words do you use to describe your relationship with your tulpas/headmates? Sibling, friend, child, parent, lover, partner, etc? What's your reasoning? Is having titles like this important for your system, or is it just a fun thing?

For us, we prefer not to have these sort of titles. We think that just being headmates is way different from what any of these terms can encapsulate, so we're just headmates, which is fine by us.

What does your system use and why?

We actually don't do that sort of thing anymore for the same reason. Describing each other with "roles" or whatnot kind of takes away from the fact that they're just people. I guess my tulpas are "life companions", which is the only term I can really use to describe our relationships. I'm also still their host, so we do use that term for me.

Can't help but feel like you and we were bad examples to start the thread off with, lol.

Hi! I'm Lumi, host of Reisen, Tewi, Flandre and Lucilyn.

Everyone deserves to love and be loved. It's human nature.

My tulpas and I have a Q&A thread, which was the first (and largest) of its kind. Feel free to ask us stuff.

Aster: We initially associated as something like siblings, and still consider each other family, but ah -- some aspects of sharing a body made thinking of each other as related in that sense really uncomfortable. So we've settled for just not particularly using labels; tulpa relationships are a class of their own!

For the first sixteen months after her arrival in this world, Vesper and I regarded one another primarily as character and player, though we also sometimes described her as my imaginary friend, which is the only term I had to work with when I finally turned to the internet to figure out what was going on in our head.

For over nine months, we've been lovers, so that's our primary relationship. It's our relationship as a couple, not her identity as a person. If she addresses me as creator or host, she's probably mocking me.

For the first thirty-four months, Iris and I didn't really think of one another in relationship terms. But then Iris adopted Vesper and I as her sisters. So for the past eight months, sister has been our primary relationship. It's been really cool; I've never had or been a sister before.

Whoever isn't using the body always maintains a form separate from the body and thinks of herself as in the form and not in the body, so there is a very deep and visceral level at which we don't think of ourselves as sharing a body -- or at least only sharing it serially and not at the same time. So despite being telepathically connected, using ordinary relationship labels is very natural and comfortable for us.

We don’t really use these sorts of labels for each other, except for Spark wanted to be called my sibling soon after ze was created, and still does, so we’re still siblings. Other than that, we consider ourselves to be similar to a family, but without specific roles for each of us.

Partners, I guess? Sharing a body and knowing everything about each other, I wouldn't really want to do with a family member or friend. We're also more affectionate than I usually am with other people. I don't really feel the need for a role title either. Partner is a vague enough word that it fits alright.

Oh boy, where do I start?

We haven't really got a name for it. I've recently compared our relationship as a parent-child relationship, but I've also compared it as having a relationship with yourself. Michen has compared it to a deep and intimate friendship, but recently also as a relationship between siblings.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle of all of these where it was compared with. A tulpa-host relationship differs from person to person, but it's it's own category. We are friends, family, and more! That's why we don't call titles like that that often. Mostly he just calls me his "tulpa" and I call him "host" or "main". That's what works best for us.

Desmond is simultaneously like a brother, a son and a best friend to me haha. He's my first, he's always gonna be my baby whether he likes it or not ;P

I can't really describe the rest that well, but we don't really use these as titles or roles or anything anyway. Desmond's not my brother in the literal sense, he's not my child (my 5-year-old brain toddler, damn), etc. For me it's too unique a relationship between me and them to really call anything other than tulpa-host relationship. They have taken some roles among themselves, though, but that's another story that I've already written about several times on my PR among other threads so eh.
