Swords were not used nearly as often as most think. They're far harder to make than most weapons, so they were generally just status symbols used by noble families.

Far harder to make than, say, attaching a big rock or peice of ore to a stick and beating the hell out of people with it.

As someone who thought about getting into realistic medieval fighting I can tell you that blunt weapons like maces and then spears were the most common and easiest to use for the untrained.

 

Someone with basic training with a spear was a fairly effective and deadly opponent to anyone with a short reach weapon like most swords.

Anyone else have trouble lucid-dreaming? I ask because I've been having fever dreams a lot lately, mostly due to sleeping at odd times, and those being so vivid reminded me how much I suck at it.

 

I usually realize I'm dreaming, and wake up immediately, no break between the two events, which sucks. I know I'm conditioned to wake myself up during sleep-paralysis, so I wonder if that's got anything to do with it. I wouldn't think so, that's more of a physical thing, and I don't recall throwing myself off of my bed every time I go lucid, but yeah.

 

Would be interesting if I could manage it. Probably best not to risk my sleep by trying to practice and screwing up, though. The few times I have managed to hold onto it were kinda cool, though, I guess.
