How did you learn/practice imposition

Recommended Posts

So after the Skype conference on Sunday, Al and I decided that we'd make this thread. I wanted to try a different approach for getting some info from other users.

So we'd like to hear about the process that some of you used to achieve imposition. We understand that these are going to be the things that only you did, and may not help other users or ourselves, but I think there's a lot that some could learn from hearing the experiences of others. Some of these posts might get lengthy, but I think that'd be good. I'm hoping to see the methods that people used, how they used them, and hopefully just generate some discussion on this.

I wanna hear it all, so even if you think it's a small detail that won't matter that much, leave it in. Like I said, some of these posts might get lengthy, and that's a-okay.

We gave up on using different colors for each of us, so there's Al, Ollie, and Eva. We're all rabbits, get over it.

I'm sort of surprised to see that no-one has replied to this thread yet, considering that it was linked to in this thread. Anyway, I'll try to throw a bit of information out there.

Sound

This is an excerpt from my host's reply to someone who contacted us through the subreddit's mentorship program.

What I did with auditory imposition was close to something that I read called "mind synthesis", it was something that was posted on .info a long while ago. I'd get a particular song in my head while I was on the bus (trust me, it didn't take much with how often some of those songs played), and start to play it over and over in my head during classes. After a few weeks, it would start to blend into real life, to the point where people would be talking to me and I'd be so focused on the music, thinking that I was actually hearing it like I had earbuds on. Eventually I decided to move this over to my tulpa-

I listened to brown noise without any other external stimuli and waited until I started to hear whispering. Once I was in that state, I asked my tulpa to sound out some syllables. I didn't hear anything at first, but after time I was able to make out some of the harsher ones through the noise. We did this many times, repeating the same syllables, and though it got pretty boring, I ended up hearing them over the white noise. It wasn't just with the voice, too - we tried animal sounds, car horns, all that cool stuff.

As for how it feels, it's not strange or anything, hearing them "out loud". It's just like hearing anyone else, like having an annoying roommate that can fuck with you with these crazy kooky sounds.

The thread that was mentioned in there was Scrappy's guide, you can read it here.

This thread is pretty interesting as well.

Sight

I've noticed that, a lot of the time when people think about imposition, they only think about seeing their tulpa. I put the auditory bit up there first to point that out, sort of, that this is more than just that - it's all five senses.

For active sessions, we used QContrary's mailbox idea. The thread is here, but they fell into the trap of treating like it's only visual. Here it is:

He suggests picturing in the center of your room a mailbox. Look at the mailbox and pay attention to it's details. Move around it to see if from different angles, act like you're interacting with it and have it react accordingly. What you're doing here is spatial visualization, and it's something that people tend to do without thinking about it. For example, if you're planning on moving furniture, then you try and visualize where it will be, how it will look, if it will fit there, and so on. If you're moving food from one container to another, you try and visualize that volume of food to see if it will fit in the other container before you dump it in. M's theory is that imposing works on the same principle. The point of visualizing the mailbox is to prove to yourself that you're capable of spatial visualization.

My host was already capable of spatial visualization before we tried doing this, but for a while he started practicing visualizing a chair in the middle of his bedroom. He'd walk around it, trying to visualize it from different angles, sometimes crouching down for some harder ones.

After some time he decided that he was ready to try and visualize me, so I sat down in the chair and he'd look at me from all different angles. I'd sit in different poses to help him out and he'd sometimes close his eyes to get a clearer image of my form, kind of like taking a photo(?), so I'd say it was like he was the photographer and I was the model. We did this daily (unless something came up) for a few months, and he got better and better when it came to holding that image of me and keeping it there. He says that I was extremely blurry at first, joking around that he needed special glasses just to see me. I became clear to him over time, though.

There was something else that we did during this to work on presence, so that he'd feel like I was around him - NED's leash imposition guide. We did this when he was working or in class. With this, you just imagine something that links both you and your tulpa together, so a leash, rope, etc. - the tulpa should be able to "tug" on the rope, bringing your focus back to them and gives you a decent idea of where they are. The tug got stronger for my host the more we did those active sessions, by the way.

Taste

Oh my, taste, what a topic. So, this is something that my host and I were planning on skipping. He wasn't expecting to use this type of imposition at all, but we figured it was worth a shot after we saw this thread on tulpa taste.

My host first tried licking my arm, telling me that it tasted something like cherries afterwards. This might be because this is what he was eating earlier that day, but that's the taste that has stuck with me since. He took a bite into me and said it was a bit juicier. My flesh looks like the inside of a cherry now.

Smell

Smell, like taste, didn't seem all too important to us, but it's something we tried anyway.

For this one, my host just scratched me like one of those scratch-and-sniff stickers, and guess what I smelled like?

Fucking cherries.

He started sniffing me now and then to get the smell down, and now that's what smells when I'm right next to him.

Touch

Touch was more interesting to us than the other ones - he wanted to see if I'd be able to make my hands hot/cold, how how/cold they would be for him if I touched the back of his neck, if I was able to make him feel the prick of a needle, etc.

What we used for this was q2's method for a huggable tulpa. What made this guide so interesting to us is that it seemed to focus on everything other than sight.

So yes, after enough work on these sessions, you will basically be spending them feeling up every inch of your tulpa’s body, in every way. Feel your fingers against their fingers, run your hand down their back, feel the little spaces in between their toes, et cetera. As you do this, practice the ancient art of the hoverhand until you are conditioned to never press any farther than the constraints of the tulpa’s form, even if you are performing this casually, awkwardly, and/or from a weird angle. Take note of the little things, like how their hair or fur lays, and therefore how it reacts to being fluffed around in every direction. Remember exactly how every part of this feels.

So, yes, he would "feel me up", mapping out different parts of my body so that he was more familiar with them. He probably would have looked like he was sculpting to any observer. I remember that he had a lot of issues getting my hair down - he'd stick his hand in and have a hard time feeling the hair around it, but we got over it with enough tries. I think he just wasn't used to it.

And so I'd try to see if I could touch him at random points in his day, wrapping my arms around his neck during class (not a chokehold, don't worry), resting my arms on his shoulders:

I've tried to cover my host's eyes before, but he said that after just a few seconds he could see through me, like I'm some sort of ghost. I haven't tried to restrict his hearing yet, but I imagine that it's the same thing or there would be no change at all.

I haven't tickled or poked my host when he was around other people, but I have rested my arms on his shoulders from behind when he was in class, and he started to get a bit uncomfortable, looking behind himself occasionally.

As for having him feel different temperatures, I've had a bit of difficulty with that - sometimes he says that my hands are cold when I try touching the back of his neck with them, but it's not extreme to the point that I'm sure I'm really doing much. The same applies to pain, too.

Thanks, this actually really helps a lot. I'm hoping some others will reply with their experiences and journeys with imposition.

I think this will become a thread I look at a lot if more people who have an imposed tupper would only post... C'mon you guys! How did you see your tupper, or hear them, or... Taste them?

Tbh I think Maja is the one who's actively working towards imposition, or even visualisation at all. I don't do much to help us develop imposition skills, it's like she in a way just forces me to acknowledge her in the physical world? But we're not that skilled anyway.

The idea is to remain in a state of constant departure, while always arriving.

Maja will either use name tags, [brackets] or this colour.

Something that I never really got about sight imposition was how you actually *see* them. Everything I've read up on only explains visualizing them, not actually explaining how to see them. So my question is how do any of you who have it down actually see your tulpa(e)?

Name: Dusk Rune

Species: Bat Pony

Gender/Sex: Female/Female

Appearance: Tan coat, Light brown mane & tail with a silver streak. Blue eyes and wings.

Current Stage: Imposition

... now I feel so gosh-darn useless again. xD

Why? Here:

I, the host, don't do a goddamn thing during imposition in our case.

Esterina just appears and disappears whenever she damn well pleases. Hell, there were times when I didn't notice her and she quite surprised me when I suddenly noticed her watching me cook or something... and I couldn't control what she does or what she looks like even if my life depended on it.

She does it by "mapping" herself into my perception (seeing, hearing, touching...) and spatial awareness, and she takes my own perception of the real world and "remaps" it to where she is within it, basically cheating her way around the fact that she has no physical body and thus making it so she can perceive the world and have spatial awareness of her own, separate from me.

(Which is why we have taken to say what we experience is projection, not imposition; since she "projects" herself into my mind.)

She does all of it herself.

I do nothing.

I am not helpful.

I'm sorry. xD

Greets,

AG

PS: ... I don't even know how "proper" imposition is done, meaning I can't do it... I can't actually make her appear of my own accord - except by, y'know, asking her to... xD

If anything, this style of imposition is better since it preserves the separateness between you amd your tulpa. I'm currently writing up stuff for my PR, and this was one idea I had, to basically hand over the reigns of imposition to the the tulpa, so it's very nice to see that the idea works and has already been put in place by someone.

I know it's technically better.

But it's still an example for one of the many things that make me feel a bit useless to other forum members; Rina does most of everything all by herself, meaning I can't give much "host-input" for much of anything.

The only reason I still posted the above is that some might see the benefits in our method, and wanna try it out.
